Sensors for Automotive Testing Applications

How force, torque, and pressure sensors are deployed across automotive testing applications — from component qualification to production-line end-of-line verification.

Measurement in Automotive Manufacturing

The automotive industry demands the highest standards of measurement accuracy, repeatability, and traceability. Every fastener, bushing, spring, and weld joint must meet strict quality specifications — and the sensors verifying them must be dependable.

JRAGRAU provides sensors and testing systems for multiple stages of automotive manufacturing:

Component qualification — Material testing machines with load cells verify metal and polymer properties before production begins.

In-process testing — Torque sensors verify fastener tightening on assembly lines. Load cells verify crimping forces on wire harness terminals.

End-of-line testing — Complete function testing of assemblies using multi-axis force and torque measurement.

Calibration — Torque wrench calibration and verification systems ensure assembly tools maintain accuracy.

Bush Stiffness Testing

Rubber and polyurethane bushings are critical to vehicle ride quality, NVH (noise, vibration, harshness), and suspension performance. Characterizing their stiffness properties requires specialized testing:

Axial stiffness — Force applied along the bushing axis, measured by a compression load cell Radial stiffness — Force applied perpendicular to the axis, measured by a load cell on a lateral slide Torsional stiffness — Torque applied around the axis, measured by a reaction torque sensor Conical stiffness — Angular force, measured by a combination of force and displacement sensors

JRAGRAU's Bush Stiffness Testing Machine integrates all four measurement modes with servo-controlled loading and computerized data acquisition. Load cells are rated for dynamic loading at frequencies up to 50 Hz to capture viscoelastic behavior.

Discuss Your Requirements

Fastener Torque Verification

Every critical fastener in an automobile — cylinder head bolts, suspension bolts, wheel nuts — must be tightened to a specified torque value. Verification requires:

Torque wrench calibration: JRAGRAU calibration systems verify torque wrench accuracy per ISO 6789, with ranges from 1 Nm to 2000 Nm.

Rotary torque-angle monitoring: For torque-to-yield (TTY) fastening, both torque and angle must be measured simultaneously. JRAGRAU's Rotary Torque & Angle Measuring System captures both parameters in real time.

End-of-line verification: Torque verification systems installed on the production floor allow operators to verify tool accuracy between shifts without sending tools to the calibration lab.

Crimping Force & Spring Testing

Crimping force monitoring: Wire harness terminals must be crimped within a tight force window. Too little force means the terminal pulls out; too much damages the wire. JRAGRAU's Crimping Force Testing Machine uses a high-speed load cell to capture the crimp force profile in milliseconds.

Automotive spring testing: Every suspension spring, valve spring, and clutch spring must meet rate and free-length specifications. JRAGRAU computerized spring testing machines measure: • Spring rate (force vs. deflection) • Free length • Solid height force • Parallelism

These machines use precision load cells with matched signal conditioning for ±0.5% reading accuracy across the test range.
